poem: warren powers
five more minutes
Footsteps echo across canyon glades
Your smile flashes back at me
My labored breath gives me away
"Just five more minutes."
The path ascends, the river distant
My temper flares - a sigh escapes
A chuckle responds, ever persistent
"Just five more minutes."
Round a bend, up then down
Darting 'neath the leafy crowns
You won't acknowledge my growing frown
"Just five more minutes."
Tender winds whisper, ever friendly
A bubbling babble, Yuba's tears fall gently
The songs of birds sung quite contently
"Just five more minutes."
Now I walk the path alone
Unable to follow where you've flown
My steps guided by a voice unknown
"Just five more minutes."
The thought of your absence inflicts such sorrow
But the memory of your light brings me hope for tomorrow
There's not a single thing I wouldn't trade
To sit by your side in the trees' cool shade
For just five more minutes.
